Honestly, there are a lot of "tough situations" you will encounter if you serve in a church. Chances are most of the time you get stuck in situations that you can't completely control. You can't just flip a switch and make things better. Maybe things aren't up to you and you just have to follow along. Maybe the solution to your problem just takes a little time to implement. So, what can you do when you are stuck in a tough situation?
Here are 3 questions you can ask when you are stuck in a tough situation:
1 | "What can I learn from this?"
Every experience is a learning opportunity. In the good and in the bad - in the easy and in the difficult - there is always something to learn. God is teaching you something through the season you're in. What is it? Is it resiliency? Is it how to be a better leader? A better communicator? Is He teaching you to let go and trust? Take a step back for a moment. Look objectively at the situation you're in. And ask: what can I learn from this?
2 | "What part of this situation can I control?"
You may not be able to control much in the situation you're stuck in but you CAN always control something. Maybe whatever situation you're stuck in is reliant on the person leading you. Perhaps things are just out of your control. But, if you look hard enough, you will find things that you CAN control. Make a list of your responsibilities. What are you in charge of? You can choose how you react to those things. Fulfill the responsibilities you DO have well.
3 | "What's one small step I can take to make things better?"
There IS a light at the end of the tunnel. Sometimes it's just really far away and hard to see. Progress doesn't always come instantly. But, if you take one small step consistently, you will eventually reach the light. Instead of thinking in terms of "this entire problem needs to be fixed," ask yourself the question: "what is one small step I can take to make things better?" Maybe it's communicating that there's a problem in the first place. Maybe it's casting vision to help someone see your side of the issue. Small steps done consistently over time = big progress.
