It's important to create space in your worship sets. This is an often overlooked aspect of leading worship. When many worship leaders start out, their objective is to get from one song to the next as quickly and as smoothly as possible.
The things is: powerful moments can happen in the in-between. When nothing is said and your church is simply allowed to breathe and reflect, God can do amazing things.
It may feel awkward to be up front and not be doing anything but once you get comfortable with it those can be some of the most powerful moments in leading worship.
Here are 3 steps for creating space in your worship sets:
1 | Look for opportunities
Look for areas in your set where there is the potential for space. Often times this is between songs. You can hang on a few chords and allow more space than normal. Embrace that time.
Another good time to create space is between the chorus and bridge of a song. Allow people to reflect on what they just sang before they respond with the bridge.
2 | Lead the moment
Don't just leave people wondering what to do - lead the moment!
This is especially important if you haven't created space in your worship set before. Give people something to reflect on - some aspect of God's character you've been singing about. Ask them to go before God and pray for something specific. There are tons of ways to lead the moment - so come up with the direction you want to take your church in and then lead them!
3 | Linger
When you first create space in your worship set you are almost guaranteed to not linger long enough. It's going to feel awkward and you'll most likely cut it short. Fight that temptation!
Have your eyes open during the space you've created (that's one of the tips that I cover in my FREE audio training by the way). Use that to gauge the room. Get a sense of if people need to linger longer or if it's time to move on.
