Getting to know your church is one of the most important things you can do as a worship leader. Each church is unique. And that's why it's so important to figure out what makes the people of your church... well... the people of your church.
Knowing the people of your church means that when you listen to a podcast, watch a YouTube video, or read a blog post (like this one), you can understand how it relates to your specific context.
For example, in tomorrow's video on the Leading Worship Well YouTube channel, we're going to look at the question "How often should you introduce a new worship song?" And while there are some general guidelines you should follow, it really all boils down to knowing your church.
But what's it actually mean to "know your church?"
Here are 3 ways to know your church:
1 | Personally
Your church is made up of people. When you lead them, you are leading them both collectively and personally. So, it helps to know what's going on in their lives. What makes them, them? How has God created them? Is there some big event happening in their life?
When you know this information, it helps you to lead them more specifically.
2 | Spiritually
Get to know where the people of your church are at spiritually. Understanding this helps you better lead them spiritually. If you want to lead them, you've got to know where they're starting from. Maybe they need a reminder about why we gather on Sunday mornings. Maybe they need to be taught different forms of worship.
3 | Musically
Worship leaders are, after all, song leaders. You are in charge of leading MUSICAL worship in your church. So, if you want to lead MUSICAL worship well, you've got to know where your church is at musically. What's their range? That'll help you pick song keys. How fast can they learn songs? That'll answer the question: how often should I introduce a new song?
