How to Receive a Compliment

How to receive a compliment

Have you ever had one of those awkward moments when someone gives you a glowing compliment and you have no idea what to say? You want to honor their encouragement but want to be humble. So what do you do?

Here are 4 ways to receive a compliment:

1 | Thank them

Affirm their opinion. Let them know that you appreciate the encouragement. You don't want to immediately dismiss them. They took the time to come up to you and encourage you so say thanks!

2 | Lift up your team

Next, shift the encouragement to your team. You weren't the only one responsible for the compliment. Your team played a major role. Some things you can say: "Thanks! The team really put in a lot of work to make that happen this week!" "Thank you! I love getting to work with the worship team. They have a lot of talent."

Make sure you give credit to your team!

3 | Point them to God

The problem with receiving compliments is it can feel like you are receiving the glory when you know that God is the one that should get it. So point the encourager to God. Some things you can say: "I'm thankful that God has allowed me to lead." "I love singing about the love of God."

4 | Ask a question - how was worship "good" today?

Get to the root of the encouragement. This goes hand in hand with pointing them to God. Ask them what made worship "good" today? That term can be very vague so press the person to go deeper. Often times you'll learn something about the person's life that you didn't know was going on. Hearing "worship was amazing because I'm going through some tough stuff right now and I was reminded of God's promises" is a lot better to hear than "worship was good. You're guitar playing was awesome!"
