Week 1 | Should We Sing?

Before we look at the benefits of our singing, we have to ask the most important question: Should we even be singing at all?

Whether you walk into a church in rural Kentucky or Ethiopia or an underground church in China, you will find believers singing.

So why do Christians seem to have an infatuation with song? Colossians 3:16 holds the answer.

In week 1, your team will learn one simple truth: We sing because God commands us to.

It’s right there in the text! Paul tells us to be “singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs.”

When God says to do it… we do it!

Week 2 | What Should We Sing?

Now that we’ve established that we should sing, we have to ask what should we be singing?

There are over 600,000 songs in the CCLI library. With so many options to choose from, how can we decide which songs to choose?

Once again, we find our answer in Colossians 3:16.

In week 2, your team will learn: We must choose songs that allow the word of Christ to dwell in us richly.

Your team will be reminded that: the Word must be the catalyst of our worship. Everything we do must flow from God’s truth.

The Word must be the content of our singing. We must sing scriptural truths.

And the Word and our singing of it become cyclical. As we saturate ourselves with the Word of God, we overflow in praise and sing the truth we’ve found, which causes us to love God more and return to His Word to start the process all over again.

Week 3 | What’s The Purpose Of Our Singing? (Part 1)

Although it’s enough to know we should sing simply because God commands us to, God also tells us why He wants us to sing.

We find the reasons in Colossians 3:16.

In week 3, your team will learn: We sing in order to teach and admonish one another in all wisdom.

One of the reason God wants us to sing is because it’s a teaching tool. It’s meant to “instill doctrine” in us. Years from now we will remember the truth of God’s Word partially because we’ve sung it over and over again.

But God doesn’t just want us to memorize facts about Him. He wants us to use that truth to admonish one another. Admonish means to “exert positive pressure on someone’s intellect to choose what’s best.”

It’s reminding each other of God’s precious truths and stirring one another to believe them!

Week 4 | What’s The Purpose Of Our Singing? (Part 2)

Maybe you’ve noticed that we haven’t yet talked about one very obvious reason that we sing.

In week 4, your team will learn the final reason we sing: to express our gratitude to God.

Your team will learn that singing is also meant to be done “with thankfulness in our hearts to God.”

However, this thankfulness is to be done alongside teaching and admonishing. They aren’t separate acts. We can do it all at the same time.

As we sing God’s word, we teach one another. As we teach one another truth, we admonish each other to believe it. As we reflect on God’s truth together, it stirs thankfulness in our hearts for what He’s done for us.

Devotionals consist of two parts:

Second - after you read the devotional, you and your team will be given a set of discussion questions to reflect on.

This is where the true transformation and learning happens.

These questions will give your team a chance to discuss what they’ve just learned and how it applies to your specific church.
